Open Fixtures
When water service is off at a home or business, fixtures can be turned on and unknowingly left in the on position. If this happens, water will begin flowing when we turn on your service, posing a potential risk of flooding. For this reason, we strongly recommend that someone is present when we turn on your water. If no one is present and our technician suspects an open fixture based on movement of the water meter's flow indicator, the technician will leave your water service off and we will reschedule your service activation. This will result in your account being charged a Revisit Fee.
Account Origination Fees
All new water accounts and sewer accounts are each charged an Account Origination Fee. The water origination fee is $35. The origination fee for a CWS sewer account is $35. The origination fee for other sewer providers varies. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable. It will appear on your first bill.
You may be required to install/annually test a backflow preventer
Charleston Water System requires most businesses, as well as residential customers who have an in-ground irrigation system, to install, maintain, and annually test a backflow preventer. These devices protect our public water supply from contamination by backflow.
We will review your account information and contact you via mail if a backflow preventer is required. If one is already installed, we will notify you of annual testing requirements. The cost of installing and annual testing of your backflow preventer will be your responsibility. Please note that failure to respond or comply with our backflow requirements will result in disconnection of your water service. Learn more
